Day 2: Dancers, Teachers, and Circle, Oh My!

Writer's picture: QuanitaQuanita

This weekend I am blessed to be at Hope Springs Institute with Planet Dance. We are here for an artist retreat with young people. It is designed to care for the mind, body, and spirit of dance artist. I am serving as a master teacher with Missy and Andrew Hubbard of Planet Dance and international dancers Jonathan Mewett and Alex Soulliere.

Last night I was so excited to land in the theme of Circles. Missy and Andrew attended my Circle Immersion retreat and couple of weeks ago and opened the retreat with the group in circle using some of what they learned at the retreat.

Because of traffic issues Alex and Jonathan weren’t a part of the opening circle and yet they opened up their evening session teaching a dance all about circles.

I was so excited at the flow of things. I was so excited to hear them talk first about following the energy of the dance instead of leading with aesthetics. This is the same was I hold circle trainings. I start with the being in circle before I move to the doing of circle. I have found that this cuts down on the imitation and supports the integration of circle. They taught in this wave pattern, modeling movement and then witnessing, modeling the next part and witnessing, and on and on. It was like the ocean this wave of dancers rolling across the floor growing in skill each time. At one point Alex focused on their eyes and said this circle dance follows your eyes, he was telling them that their attention and intention for where they are going matters. In my work in circle often say speak with intention and listen with attention. I love this connection because speaking and listening can and does happen with our whole body, with our whole selves.

I felt a full circle moment, with these dancers, these teachers, this circle of connection with self, other, and the larger world. This morning I get to hold these dancers in circle. I get to take what they did yesterday with these amazing teachers and connect it to the rest of their lives. I get to support wholeness through Circle practice. How lovely! 🥰
