Day 16: Exploring Vulnerageous Unity: The Evolution of Church in a Changing World

Yesterday I finished my time with the Rocky Mountain Conference of the UCC at the beautiful La Foret Conference and Retreat Center. We got to be the 1st group to stay in their new Lapp Lodge. We gathered this past week from Monday afternoon until Wednesday at 12:00pm. This was the 1st gathering of its kind. We had board members, staff, and clergy in the room together. They were exploring the question what does church look like for them now and in the future. They were tending to church wounds and celebrating successes.

They came together in this way with all the changes that have happened since 2020. They each arrived with their own hopes, dreams, and fear. They each have their own ideas of what church should be.

The thing that I want to most highlight here is how vulnerageous (vulnerable + courageous) they were as individuals and as a collective. They spoke truth to themselves and to each other. They held each other in grief during our grief ritual. They hosted conversations that they were passionate about having with each other. And, they left more connected then when they arrived. They give me hope in what church can be.

I thank them for trusting each other. I thank them for trusting me. I thank them for trusting God.
